Niall Quinn joined Sunderland from Manchester City in August 1996 for a side record £1.3 million. His partnership with Kevin Phillips helped Sunderland win the Championship in 1999, and in 1999-2000 back in the Premier competition, Quinn made 38 competition appearances, scoring 14 goals as Sunderland finished in seventh position. Kevin Phillips played in every competition game, scoring 30 competition goals.
